How to fight the nut bud mite?

The nut bud mite is common in all regions of Georgia and it poses a serious threat to gardens. The pest can even destroy 70% of the plantation. At this time, the most effective way is to mechanically remove the damaged bud, remove it from the plot and burn it. Along with this, it is important to monitor the farm, timely medication and the correct selection of the drug in order to reduce the damage to the crop as much as possible.

How to identify the nut bud mite?

The mite settles on the buds of the nut plant, causing the buds to develop abnormally or fail to develop at all. Damaged fruit buds are deformed and resemble a withered flower, their size is 4 times larger than healthy ones. Also, the leaf buds are significantly swollen in the spring and are about 20 times larger than healthy buds. Distorted buds are visible from winter and increase until early spring. Damaged buds do not bloom in the spring, wither and fall, or sometimes give undeveloped shoots.

Spring migration of overwintering ticks begins in April-May, and summer migration in July-August. During intensive reproduction, up to 30,000 mites can be found in one bud.

When should we schedule the medication?

A successful fight against the bud mite is hindered by the fact that it lives in the bud and is protected from the effects of various factors.

The migration of mites from old buds begins in April, when the average day-night temperature reaches 13-14 , and the relative humidity is 50-60% . Migration is more active in the month of May, at this time mites are scattered outside the buds, which can be seen with the naked eye. The process takes place in sunny weather and is stopped in rainy weather. Along with adult mites, eggs are found in damaged buds, from which the pest hatches and spreads to healthy buds.

The medication administered at the peak of migration is the most effective.

What can we do against the bud mite?

Monitoring is necessary in order to determine the correct period of medication.

An experienced and effective way to fight the bud mite is to treat it with “Pirate”, which destroys its eggs along with the adult mite. The use of “Pirate” is recommended in April-May, when mites are on the surface of leaves and twigs. “Pirate” does not harm beneficial insects.
