What is an excipient?
Most pesticides often have adjuvants added to enhance or improve their effectiveness. The adsorbent, the same auxiliary substance, improves the spread of the drop from the sprayer, as a result of which the leaf is better wetted. Surface tension is characteristic of water, due to which the drop takes a spherical shape, so it is not possible to cover the entire surface of the leaf. Adjuvants reduce water tension and spread the drop more widely on the leaf surface.
Adhesive, auxiliary substance is classified according to electric charge, namely:
- Anionic (negative charge) – mostly used with contact pesticides.
- Cationic (positive charge) – rarely used, often showing phytotoxicity.
- Non-ionic (no charge) – more often used with systemic drugs, helps the drug penetrate the plant tissues. These types of excipients are most often used in medicines.
With which drugs can the adhesive be used?
The use of repellents is preferred along with fungicides, insecticides, herbicides and some folate feeding products.
When used together with fungicides , the effectiveness of the drug increases, the entire surface of the plant is evenly covered with the mixture, systemic drugs penetrate the plant tissues better and reduce the risk of being washed away by rain. When using a contact preparation, it is important to cover the entire surface of the plant, because these types of fungicides act locally, where the solution enters, and do not penetrate into the plant tissues. When using an adhesive, the solution is evenly distributed and increases the effectiveness of the drug against fungal diseases.
Using an attractant together with insecticides increases the effectiveness of the prepared solution. The above-ground parts of the plant are better moistened. Vegetable oil-based nonionic surfactants are often used along with insecticides because they also exhibit insecticidal properties. The mechanism of their action is mechanical in nature, causing the pest’s respiratory tract to be blocked.
The use of herbicides in combination with repellents is most common, especially in the fight against sharp-leaved weeds. The solution prepared on sharp-leaved weeds is not distributed well, and often the sprayed drops do not even stay on the plant, which of course has a negative effect on the effectiveness of the drug. Also, using it together with a total herbicide gives results much faster.
Astringent significantly increases the effectiveness of drugs, which further leads to a high and quality harvest.
The most budget-friendly and effective solution on the Georgian market is the Estonian-made drug – Festival.
